Greenpeace discovers new species in threatened Bering Sea

     the  research voyage to the Bering Sea has led to the discovery of a species of sponge new to science. Using state-of-the-art manned submarines to explore the world's deepest underwater canyons the new sponge was collected in samples of never before seen life from the Bering Sea floor.

               The announcement of the discovery comes on the same day that the UN meets in New York to discuss the protection of the high seas. "We know so little about the seas around us and far less about the open oceans. This amazing discovery underscores the need for the UN to establish a global network of marine reserves and to stop the current free-for-all whereby habitats and species are being destroyed before scientists have even had a chance to give them names," said Richard Page, an oceans campaigner for Greenpeace International, attending the meeting.

Arab League: Reject Proposal to Restrict Satellite Broadcasts

(New York, February 26, 2008) – Arab governments should publicly reject those elements of a proposed regional policy on satellite television broadcasting that would seriously restrict freedom of expression and information, Human Rights Watch said today.

During their meeting in Cairo on February 12, Arab ministers of information adopted “Principles for Organizing Satellite Broadcast and Television Transmission and Reception in the Arab Region.” The document, introduced by Egypt and Saudi Arabia, calls on the regulatory bodies in Arab League member states to ensure that satellite channels broadcasting from their jurisdictions do not “negatively affect social peace, national unity, public order, and public morals” or “defame leaders, or national and religious symbols [of other Arab states].”

Only Qatar and Lebanon publicly opposed the document and its proposed restrictions.

“Arab League governments are trying to stifle one of the few relatively uncensored forms of mass communication in the region,” said Joe Stork, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “Egypt and Saudi Arabia should be ashamed for sponsoring a proposal that would extend repression of free speech to airwaves across the region.”

The vaguely worded restrictions that this document places on freedom of expression would seriously impede the right of people in the region to express views critical of the governments and to receive news and commentary reflecting critical opinions. For example, article 5 obliges broadcasters to “protect the supreme interests the Arab states,” and “respect the principle of national sovereignty.” Devising legislation and regulations detailing the implementation of these principles would be left up to individual member states.

The document, intended as guidelines that carry no legal obligations, recommends that the regulatory bodies of Arab League members states confiscate equipment, impose fines, and suspend, refuse to renew or withdraw licenses from satellite channels that authorities deem to have violated those “principles.”

“Many Arab states routinely use this language of ‘state interests’ and ‘national sovereignty’ as an excuse to imprison journalists and intimidate critics,” Stork said. “These so-called principles are nothing but a crude assault on free speech.”

Domestic laws in most Arab states severely restrict freedom of expression and the media. Jordan is the only country with a law guaranteeing freedom of access to information, but even there the Ministry of Interior decides what information is excluded from this freedom of access under broadly worded national security exemptions. On December 12, 2007, Jordan’s Court of Cassation upheld a State Security Court sentence of two years in prison for former parliamentarian Ahmad Oweidi al-‘Abbadi for “disseminating ... news he knows to be false or exaggerated which undermine the psychology of the [Islamic] nation.”

Egypt, one of the document’s sponsors, has repeatedly prosecuted reporters under its penal code for broadly worded “crimes.” On September 13, 2007, a Cairo court sentenced four editors of independent and opposition newspapers for publicizing “false news, statements or rumors that are likely to disturb public order.” In early February 2008, an appeals court upheld the conviction of Al Jazeera reporter Huwaida Taha for “possessing and giving false pictures about the internal situation in Egypt that could undermine the dignity of the country” with a documentary about torture in Egyptian police stations.

Saudi Arabia, the other sponsor, has no written penal code and routinely imprisons dissidents for broadly worded charges such as “going beyond the realm of obedience to the ruler.” On December 10, 2007, authorities arrested Saudi blogger Fu’ad al-Farhan, apparently for criticizing the earlier arrest of reform activists in February 2007. He remains in incommunicado detention in Dahban prison in Jeddah without, so far as is known, having been charged.

In Syria, authorities have similarly prosecuted human rights defenders and bloggers on charges of “spreading false news that weaken the spirit of the nation,” for disseminating articles “that harmed the image and security of Syria.”

Iraq has closed down at least three satellite TV stations’ operations since 2004, when it permanently denied Al Jazeera to have a presence in the country. In November 2006, authorities closed al-Zaqra and Salah al-Din stations’ offices because they allegedly incited sectarian tensions following their coverage of the verdict against former president Saddam Hussein. A spokesman for the interior ministry justified the January 2007 closing of the office of al-Sharqiyya satellite station and the September 2006 closing of al-Arabiya satellite channel on similar grounds, without recourse to the courts or publicly demonstrating that these broadcasts led to violence.

Last year authorities in Tunisia refused to accept the accreditation of Lotfi Hajji as correspondent of Al Jazeera. Hajji is also president of the independent Tunisian Journalists Syndicate, which the government has refused to legalize.

Implementing the document’s operative articles would violate international law and standards on freedom of expression, in particular article 19 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protect the “right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.”

Exercise of this right cannot be restricted on grounds such as “national security,” “public order,” or the “respect for the rights and reputations of others” when these restrictions are defined in an overly broad way. The Johannesburg Principles on freedom of expression clarify that such restrictions on freedom of expression are only legitimate where they “protect a country’s existence or its territorial integrity against the use or threat of force, or its capacity to respond to the use or threat of force,” but not “to protect interests unrelated to national security, including, for example, to protect a government from embarrassment or exposure of wrongdoing, or to conceal information about the functioning of its public institutions, or to entrench a particular ideology, or to suppress industrial unrest.”

“Qatar and Lebanon have shown that Arab support for tight restrictions on satellite broadcasting is not unanimous,” said Stork. “Other Arab states should follow their example and speak up for media freedoms by publicly opposing this document.”

البرلمان العراقي يختار علما مؤقتا بلا نجوم .. وكردستان مستعدة لرفعه

أكد الدكتور فؤاد معصوم، رئيس الكتلة الكردية في مجلس النواب (البرلمان) العراقي، موافقة المجلس على علم مؤقت للعراق. وقال في حديث لـ«الشرق الاوسط» عبر الهاتف من بغداد أمس، ان «بعض التعديلات التي تمت مناقشتها في اجتماعات سابقة تم اقرارها وهي رفع النجوم الثلاث التي كانت تعني اهداف حزب البعث، الوحدة والحرية والاشتراكية، والإبقاء على عبارة الله أكبر باللون الاخضر ولكن بالخط الكوفي».

وكان مجلس النواب قد اجرى امس اقتراعا لاختيار علم وطني جديد بشكل مؤقت، في خطوة يطالب بها منذ فترة الاكراد الذين يعتبرون علم البلاد خلال فترة الرئيس الراحل صدام حسين يعيد للاذهان الوحشية التي اتسمت بها فترة حكمه. وأبدى نواب البرلمان وحدة نادرة بشأن هذه القضية الحساسة التي تمثل انفصالا رمزيا عن الماضي، حسبما ذكرت وكالة رويترز. ورفض العراقيون محاولة سابقة من الحكومة المؤقتة عام 2004 لتغيير علم البلاد.

وزاد الجدل بشأن تغيير العلم خلال فترة ما بعد صدام مع التخطيط لعقد اجتماع لاتحاد البرلمانيين العرب في اربيل (عاصمة اقليم كردستان) في العاشر من مارس (اذار). ورفض مسؤولون أكراد، خاصة في اربيل وفي المناطق الخاضعة لسيطرة الحزب الديمقراطي الكردستاني الذي يتزعمه مسعود بارزاني رفع العلم الحالي الممنوع في كردستان حيث يرفع علم الاقليم الذي يتكون من ثلاثة الوان هي الاحمر والابيض والاخضر وتحتل شمس ذهبية منتصف العلم، بينما كان العلم العراقي ذو النجوم الثلاث والذي لا يحمل عبارة «الله اكبر» يرفع في مدينة السليمانية والمناطق الخاضعة لسيطرة الاتحاد الوطني الكردستاني الذي يتزعمه الرئيس جلال طالباني،الى جانب علم الاقليم.

واكد معصوم ان «العلم الجديد سيتم رفعه على جميع المؤسسات الرسمية في اقليم كردستان الى جانب علم الاقليم حيث سيظل العلم الجديد هو العلم الرسمي لفترة عام واحد فقط يتواصل خلالها النقاش حول الشكل النهائي للعلم».

ولم تبد الكتل الشيعية والسنية والكردية في البرلمان قدرا كبيرا من المعارضة للعلم الجديد المقترح لانه مماثل تقريبا للعلم القديم وأيده 110 بين 165 عضوا. يذكر ان هذه هي المرة الرابعة التي يتغير فيها العلم العراقي منذ تأسيس الدولة العراقية، حيث رفع علم المملكة العراقية الهاشمية في العهد الملكي الذي بدأ بتولي الملك فيصل الاول على عرش العراق عام 1921 وانتهى بمقتل ثالث ملوك العراق فيصل الثاني عام 1958، ثم تم رفع علم اول جمهورية عراقية في عهد الزعيم عبد الكريم قاسم الذي استمر منذ 1958 وحتى 1963 عندما قتل البعثيون قاسم.

اما العلم الثالث فقد تم رفعه في عهد عبد السلام عارف وهو ذات العلم العراقي الحالي من غير عبارة «الله اكبر» وكانت النجوم الثلاث ترمز للوحدة بين مصر والعراق وسورية، وكان هذا العلم معتمدا في الدول الثلاث قبل ان يتغير في مصر وسورية ومن ثم العراق عندما وضع صدام حسين عبارة «الله اكبر» بخط يده خلال الحرب العراقية الايرانية

Human Impacts on Antarctica and Threats to the Environment - Tourism

Antarctica doesn't have any "residents" in that everyone who goes is a visitor for a short time. There are two groups of visitors who can have an impact on Antarctica, tourists and those who go as part of a national Antarctic programme.

In terms of numbers, tourists greatly outnumber national programme personnel 37,000 as against 4,000 in the 2006/2007 season for instance (tourist numbers were up 14% on the previous year leading to calls to limit the number of tourists allowed to go). The national programme personnel clock up far more person-days however, and impacts are difficult to compare directly.

While tourists may only only spend a relatively small time on landings, it is by its nature relatively "high-impact" time - compared to a scientist or electrician say who probably spend most of their time on a permanent or semi-permanent base. Tourists also, by their nature will want to visit the most picturesque and wildlife rich areas of Antarctica, and they tend to do so in numbers far greater than the entire compliment of many Antarctic bases.

There is also the fact that those national programmes that are supplied by ship (as the majority are) have relatively few visits of those ships, whereas in the season, the great majority of all shipping activity in Antarctica is of tour ships. There have been accidents with ships being grounded on uncharted rocks and there have been oil-spills. With the best safe-guards in the world (and it has to be said that marine regulations for Antarctic ships, both statuary and self-imposed are as good as they get) the more ships there are, the more accidents there will be.

Tourism in Antarctica is at present self-regulated by the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO). This is an organization that applies strict guidelines to its member tour operators and ships. Such guidelines limit the size of the ships that can cruise Antarctic waters and also how many people can be landed at sites around Antarctica. So far IAATO is perceived as being successful in its aims and in regulation for Antarctic protection - though there are always those who would have no tourism at all.

The real potential threat from tourists is from non IAATO member ships and tour operators who run cruises with larger ships and greater numbers of people landing. This has not happened yet to any significant degree, but if it does, at present, there is little or nothing that could be done.

Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly common by individuals and small parties. Antarctica requires careful planning and a series of fail-safe rescue procedures if anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller expeditions often fail to do this adequately and resort to "humanitarian" requests for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty. In recent years for example a small helicopter crashed into the sea off the Antarctic peninsula requiring rescue and an attempt to fly across Antarctica via the pole in a small aircraft ended by the aircraft crashing and the pilot being rescued by nearby base personnel.

There is no guarantee that derelict or crashed vehicles left by private expeditioners will be removed from Antarctica as they should be.

لم ينقطع ظهور حركات الإصلاح التي كانت تسعى إلى بناء مشروعات للنهضة على أساس من الدين ، في تاريخ القارة السمراء ، وإذا ذكرت حركات الإصلاح الدينية في إفريقيا (قارة الإسلام) يأتي في مقدمتها على الإطلاق حركة الشيخ (عثمان دان فوديو) التي نمت في بلاد الهوسا والفولاني بين شمال نيجيريا وما يعرف اليوم بـ ( تشاد) وأدت إلى قيام دولة إسلامية على امتداد ما يقارب قرناً من الزمن ، بين أوائل القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين. وهي الحركة التي كان لمؤسسها الأثر الحاسم في إرساء دعائم الدعوة في تلك المنطقة ، بل في القارة الإفريقية بكاملها.

ولد الشيخ (عثمان بن محمد فوديو) على الأرجح عام 1168 للهجرة الموافق 15 ديسمبر من عام 1754م ، واسم فوديو الذي اشتهر به والده يعني بلغة الفولانيين الفقيه ، وكانت ولادته في قرية (تغل) بمنطقة (غوبر) إحدى مناطق بلاد (الهوسا).

نشأ (الشيخ عثمان) في حجر والدين صالحين كانا لهما الفضل الكبير في توجيهه إلى العلم والدين الذي أولع به منذ أن عرف الحلم ، إذ هداه الله إلى نور الإيمان وأضاء به قلبه ، فأدرك ما يعانيه شعبه من مآس وفتن نتيجة سيادة الأفكار الخاطئة وآثار الجاهلية الخبيثة ، فعمل بوعي وتصميم على تغيير هذا الواقع ، ففتح الله على يديه بلاداً واسعة وشعوباً كثيرة ، وأسس حركته التي ما زالت آثارها باقية إلى وقتنا الحالي.

وكان يفتخر في كثير من المناسبات بدور والدته (حواء) وجدته (رقية) في تعليمه صغيراً ، وهو ما يعكس المستوى العلمي الذي كانت عليه عائلته ، خاصة نساؤها اللواتي كن على مستوى عالٍ من العلم والمعرفة.

ومن أشهر أساتذته الشيخ (جبريل) الذي قام بواجبه تجاه تلميذه مرتين : الأولى عندما قدم للشيخ علوماً مفيدة ساهمت في تكوين شخصيته العلمية والسياسية ، والثانية عندما كان أول من بايعه على الجهاد في سبيل نشر الإسلام في تلك المنطقة ، واعترف له بالولاية وعقد له الراية ، وفي المقابل لم يكن (الشيخ) أقل سمواً من معلمه : فقد كان يردد بشكل دائم هذا البيت من الشعر :

إن قيل في بحسن الظن ما قيل فموجة أنا من أمواج جبريلا

وفي وسط بيئة تسودها الأفكار والعادات والتقاليد الجاهلية ، بدأ الشيخ عثمان بن فوديو عمله الشاق في الدعوة إلى الله ، حيث كان المجتمع محكوماً من مجموعة من الملوك والأمراء الذين يتطاحنون على حق السيادة ، ويتنازعون على الأرض والأرزاق واستعباد الناس ، فقد عرفت المناطق الإفريقية الواقعة جنوب الصحراء عصراً من عصور الملكية المطلقة ، تميز بالصراعات التي أودت بحياة الكثيرين من أبنائها ، بسبب سيادة الأفكار القبلية التي لا مجال معها للوحدة بين القبائل دون غالب أو مغلوب ، بحيث تستمر حلقات الصراع القبلي دون توقف ، مع ما يرافق ذلك من سيادة العقلية الحربية التي تضع شرائح كبيرة من المجتمع في دائرة الاستضعاف ، وتحول دون التفكير في بناء وحدة تحت راية واحدة ولغة واحدة وأهداف واحدة ، وبالتالي إنتاج حالة أكثر تقدماً مما كان موجوداً سابقاً ، لا سيما أن هؤلاء الملوك كانوا على عقائد وثنية متخلفة ، ما زالت بقاياها قائمة حتى أيامنا هذه عبر ما يسمى بالعقائد الأرواحية التقليدية.

فمن العادات التي كانت سائدة على سبيل المثال أنه كان لهؤلاء الملوك والسلاطين أماكن خاصة يؤمنون بضرورة تقديم الأضاحي البشرية لها مثل الغابات والصخور الكبيرة والبحر. معتقدين أن هذه العادات هي مصدر قوتهم ، لا ينبغي التخلي عنها وإلا ضعفت شوكتهم وقلت أرزاقهم. كما كانوا يؤمنون كذلك بأن الحكم السياسي هو استمرار لإدارة الأسلاف التي يجسدها الملك الذي يستمد قوته من فرض إرادته على الناس من خلال ادعائه بوجود اتصال روحاني مع هؤلاء الأسلاف : الأمر الذي يبرر حكمه المطلق الذي لا مجال للخروج عنه.

ورغم أن الإسلام دخل هذه المنطقة منذ مئات السنين ، إلا أنه لم يكن يتجاوز حدود الدعاية للسلاطين وتبرير تصرفاتهم من خلال وعاظهم والسحرة والمشعوذين ، وإن كانت هناك بعض الممارسات الدينية كالعبادات وقراءة القرآن الكريم وتقبل العطاءات باعتبارها وسيلة لبلوغ الحوائج ، ولعل بعض المسلمين كانوا يجدون في بضع الطرق الصوفية ملاذاً مشوهاً للتدين.

في مثل هذه الأوضاع الدينية والسياسية ، بدأ الشيخ ابن فوديو دعوته ، حيث أخذ على عاتقه مهمة تحرير شعبه من سيادة الأفكار الجاهلية المتخلفة ، ومن سيطرة السلاطين الجبابرة : الأمر الذي أفضى إلى إقامة دولة إسلامية استمرت أكثر من مئة سنة في تلك البلاد البعيدة عن مركز الدولة الإسلامية دون أي تدخل خارجي.

لقد بدأ (الشيخ) دعوته بما أسماه في أدبياته (الجهاد القولي) الذي قام على النصح والإرشاد ورفع المستوى التعليمي ومستوى الوعي الاجتماعي العام لدى الناس ، حيث أرسل رسائل إلى كل فئات المجتمع يدعوها إلى الله ، موضحاً أهمية الإسلام في إحياء الأمة وخلاصها من مشاكلها الواقعية التي تعيشها.

وقد ركز في أسلوب دعوته خلال هذه المرحلة على استخدام عنصرين مهمين :

أولهما التركيز على موضوع المرأة في النموذج الإسلامي ، والفرق بينهما وبين المرأة في النموذج الجاهلي المتخلف ، مستفيداً من مساهمة الكثير من السيدات المسلمات في حركة النهضة التي قادها الشيخ ، وهي القضية التي أظهرت تحدياً كبيراً للأفكار السائدة من خلال دعوة المرأة إلى التحرر من الاستعباد الحقيقي الذي تعيشه في ظل الوضع السائد.

وثانيهما اعتماده على استخدام الشعر والموشحات الدينية بالطريقة الشعبية المعروفة في تلك البلاد والمحببة إلى القلوب ، وفي هذا المجال كان مبدعاً في تأليف كمية كبيرة من القصائد والموشحات ذات المضمون الأخلاقي والعلمي والإرشادي باللغات المحلية ، وقد كانت هذه القصائد تنتقل من ألسنة الدعاة إلى ألسنة العامة. وما زال كثير منها محفوظاً حتى اليوم ، خاصة إذا علمنا أن الثقافة الإفريقية تنتقل عن طريق الحفظ والرواية لا عن طريق الكتابة والتدوين.

وقد استمرت هذه المرحلة من عام 1774 حتى 1803 أي حوالي 30 سنة من الدعوة والبناء السليم لحركة الدعاة والمبلغين والتحدي الأخلاقي والفكري والاجتماعي للمجتمع القائم ، دون اللجوء إلى أسلوب المواجهة المباشرة ، بل عرف عنه في تلك المرحلة تشديده على الدعاة بعدم الدخول في صدام مع القوى المسيطرة وقد ألف في هذه المرحلة الكثير من المؤلفات الهادفة والدراسات القيمة.

وكان ينتقل بين المدن والقرى بنفسه وانتهت هذه المرحلة بتأسيس المجموعة الأساسية من الأتباع أو من أسماهم بالطلبة بهدف نشر الصورة الصحيحة للإسلام وتقديم النموذج الأرقى للدين القويم ، وفضح علماء السوء الذين كانوا يرون المنكر ولا يغيرونه بأي شكل من أشكال التغيير المتاحة.

وبهذا المنهج الدعوي السليم آتت دعوة الشيخ الطيبة ثمارها اليانعة ، حيث بدأ المواطنون يعلنون رفضهم للأوامر التي تتنافى مع تعاليم الإسلام ، خاصة في أوساط الشباب الذين أدركوا أن الصراعات القائمة في مجتمعهم إنما تعود أسبابها إلى السرقة والتعدي ونهب المحاصيل أو الثروات الحيوانية ، حتى الفتيات بدأن يرفضن ما يؤمرن به إذا كان منافياً لأحكام الدين الحنيف ، مما دفع ملك المنطقة إلى المطالبة بمغادرة (الشيخ) خوفاً من أن يسحب البساط من تحت قدميه ، غير أن (الشيخ) كان قد اتخذ قراره بالهجرة مع مجموعته كلها ، وأصدر فتوى في ذلك أذيعت في مختلف الأمصار ، وما إن انتقلت الأخبار إلى المدن المجاورة ، حتى تجمع المؤمنون من كافة أنحاء البلاد لبناء مجتمع قائم على الحكم الإسلامي.

استمرت هذه المرحلة إلى عام 1808 وتوطدت خلالها دعائم الحكم الإسلامي ، حيث وضع نظاماً إدارياً متقدماً مستمداً من النظم الإسلامية ووحد البلاد تحت راية واحدة وجعل اللغة العربية لغة الدولة الرسمية ، واستمرت هذه الدولة حوالي مئة سنة حتى دخول الاستعمار البريطاني إلى تلك المنطقة ، حيث قرر الملك الآنف الذكر أن يجهز جيشاً لمقاتلة المجموعة المؤمنة ، فالتقى الجيشان وانتهت المعركة بنصر جيش المسلمين ، فكانت هذه المعركة جولة حاسمة انهار على أثرها الكثير من الجيوش والممالك الصغيرة بالقتال أو الترهيب ، وفي هذه المرحلة التي عرفت بمرحلة الجهاد المسلح ، تمت الخطوة الحاسمة التي لم يكن بالإمكان أن يستقيم الوضع دونها ألا وهي مبايعة الشيخ قائداً وإماماً على سنة الله ورسوله.

لقد نجح الشيخ في تغيير مجتمعه وإقامة شرع الله فيه على طريقة الشيخ الولي المعروفة عند الطرق الصوفية ، ولكنه أبدع في تحويلها إلى حركة إيجابية قادرة على استنهاض الطاقات الكامنة داخل الأمة عبر إحياء روح الجهاد والشهادة في سبيل الله ، بعد أن كانت تعرف بعزوفها عن التدخل المباشر في قضايا الحكم والدولة.

وقد اعتمد في حركته على مبدأ الولاية المكتسبة بالعلم والخبرة ، والمعززة بالمبايعة من قبل العلماء ووجوه الأمة ، والمرتكزة على اطمئنان الجمهور المتواصل لقيادته بشكل دائم.

ولم ينتحل الشيخ أية دعوة خاصة على الطريقة الفاطمية أو المهدوية ، بل استمر في الدعوة إلى المنابع الأصيلة للفكر الإسلامي بل أنه خاض مجموعة من النقاشات مع أنصاره خاصة يدعوهم فيها إلى عدم نسبة الصفة المهدية إليه وإلى حركته فقد كانت حركته تعبيراً عن تطور الظروف المحلية التي استشعرت إمكانية النهوض والتطور نتيجة احتكاكها وتعرفها على الدعوة الإسلامية بصورتها الصحيحة، وبالتالي لم يعرف عنها الانتماء إلى أي من الاتجاهات التي كان يضج بها المجتمع الإسلامي ، كما أنها لم تكن كمثيلاتها من الحركات الإفريقية حيث كان التمسك فيها بالإسلام تعبيراً عن ردة فعل على الغزو الاستعماري الأوروبي الذي جاء ليؤسس نموذجاً حضارياً غريباً ومنافياً للطبيعة الإفريقية التقليدية.

كانت شخصية الشيخ متعددة المواهب ، وهو ما يظهر بسهولة حين نرى تراثه العلمي الضخم الذي يقدم مباحث فقهية معقدة يتناول فيها الأبحاث بشكل اجتهادي عميق ينم عن شخصية فقيه فذ وعالم فريد وعارف رباني لا ينشد إلا هداية المجتمع إلى شاطئ الأمان ، وقد ترك (الشيخ عثمان بن فوديو) أكثر من 150 عملاً فكرياً وفقهياً ، معظمها حتى الآن بحاجة إلى تحقيق وطباعة وترجمة تسمح بالاستفادة منها والتعرف عليها .

إضافة إلى هذا ، فإن الشيخ كان رجل ميدان وحركة وتخطيط استراتيجي سليم ، تنقل في كل مكان من أجل نشر لدعوة ، وهيأ تلاميذه كهيئة أركان قادرة على الحوار والنقاش والدعوة النظرية ، في الوقت الذي كانت قادرة فيه على الانتقال للهجرة والجهاد والمقارعة ، بما في ذلك إدارة اللعبة السياسية وتهيئة الجيوش والتخطيط للمعارك ، ثم النزول في صفوفها الأمامية.

كما اتصف (الشيخ) بصفات شخصية قيادية وخلقية فذة ، فقد كان شديد التواضع أمام بسطاء الناس وخاصة أمام أساتذته ومعلميه ، وقد وصفه العالم المؤرخ النيجيري (محمد بلو) بقوله : ( إنه كان خطيباً بليغاً ، وشاعراً فصيحاً فاضلاً ، حسن الخلق ، جميل العشرة ، كريم الصحبة ، كثير الحياد ، متواضعاً ، يرى نفسه كأقل الحشرات ، وقافاً عند حدود الشريعة إلفاً مألوفاً ، حتى كان أحب الناس إلى أنفسهم ، يتزاحمون عليه مع طلاقة وحسن خلق وبشاشة).

توفي (رحمه الله) عام 1817 تقريباً ، لكنه خلف ذريته الكريمة التي أنجبت الكثير من الرموز الكبيرة في عطائها ، وترك وراءه أثاراً فكرية واسعة ستشكل الزاد الضروري لأية حركة نهوضية حديثة أو مستقبلية.

وعَنْ صُهَيْبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهم عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ كَانَ مَلِكٌ فِيمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ وَكَانَ لَهُ سَاحِرٌ فَلَمَّا كَبِرَ قَالَ لِلْمَلِكِ إِنِّي قَدْ كَبِرْتُ فَابْعَثْ إِلَيَّ غُلَامًا أُعَلِّمْهُ السِّحْرَ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ غُلَامًا يُعَلِّمُهُ فَكَانَ فِي طَرِيقِهِ إِذَا سَلَكَ رَاهِبٌ فَقَعَدَ إِلَيْهِ وَسَمِعَ كَلَامَهُ فَأَعْجَبَهُ فَكَانَ إِذَا أَتَى السَّاحِرَ مَرَّ بِالرَّاهِبِ وَقَعَدَ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا أَتَى السَّاحِرَ ضَرَبَهُ فَشَكَا ذَلِكَ إِلَى الرَّاهِبِ فَقَالَ إِذَا خَشِيتَ السَّاحِرَ فَقُلْ حَبَسَنِي أَهْلِي وَإِذَا خَشِيتَ أَهْلَكَ فَقُلْ حَبَسَنِي السَّاحِرُ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ أَتَى عَلَى دَابَّةٍ عَظِيمَةٍ قَدْ حَبَسَتِ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ الْيَوْمَ أَعْلَمُ آلسَّاحِرُ أَفْضَلُ أَمِ الرَّاهِبُ أَفْضَلُ فَأَخَذَ حَجَرًا فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ أَمْرُ الرَّاهِبِ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ أَمْرِ السَّاحِرِ فَاقْتُلْ هَذِهِ الدَّابَّةَ حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ النَّاسُ فَرَمَاهَا فَقَتَلَهَا وَمَضَى النَّاسُ فَأَتَى الرَّاهِبَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّاهِبُ أَيْ بُنَيَّ أَنْتَ الْيَوْمَ أَفْضَلُ مِنِّي قَدْ بَلَغَ مِنْ أَمْرِكَ مَا أَرَى وَإِنَّكَ سَتُبْتَلَى فَإِنِ ابْتُلِيتَ فَلَا تَدُلَّ عَلَيَّ وَكَانَ الْغُلَامُ يُبْرِئُ الْأَكْمَهَ وَالْأَبْرَصَ وَيُدَاوِي النَّاسَ مِنْ سَائِرِ الْأَدْوَاءِ فَسَمِعَ جَلِيسٌ لِلْمَلِكِ كَانَ قَدْ عَمِيَ فَأَتَاهُ بِهَدَايَا كَثِيرَةٍ فَقَالَ مَا هَاهُنَا لَكَ أَجْمَعُ إِنْ أَنْتَ شَفَيْتَنِي فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَا أَشْفِي أَحَدًا إِنَّمَا يَشْفِي اللَّهُ فَإِنْ أَنْتَ آمَنْتَ بِاللَّهِ دَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ فَشَفَاكَ فَآمَنَ بِاللَّهِ فَشَفَاهُ اللَّهُ فَأَتَى الْمَلِكَ فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ كَمَا كَانَ يَجْلِسُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْمَلِكُ مَنْ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ بَصَرَكَ قَالَ رَبِّي قَالَ وَلَكَ رَبٌّ غَيْرِي قَالَ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ فَأَخَذَهُ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُعَذِّبُهُ حَتَّى دَلَّ عَلَى الْغُلَامِ فَجِيءَ بِالْغُلَامِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْمَلِكُ أَيْ بُنَيَّ قَدْ بَلَغَ مِنْ سِحْرِكَ مَا تُبْرِئُ الْأَكْمَهَ وَالْأَبْرَصَ وَتَفْعَلُ وَتَفْعَلُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَا أَشْفِي أَحَدًا إِنَّمَا يَشْفِي اللَّهُ فَأَخَذَهُ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُعَذِّبُهُ حَتَّى دَلَّ عَلَى الرَّاهِبِ فَجِيءَ بِالرَّاهِبِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ارْجِعْ عَنْ دِينِكَ فَأَبَى فَدَعَا بِالْمِئْشَارِ فَوَضَعَ الْمِئْشَارَ فِي مَفْرِقِ رَأْسِهِ فَشَقَّهُ حَتَّى وَقَعَ شِقَّاهُ ثُمَّ جِيءَ بِجَلِيسِ الْمَلِكِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ارْجِعْ عَنْ دِينِكَ فَأَبَى فَوَضَعَ الْمِئْشَارَ فِي مَفْرِقِ رَأْسِهِ فَشَقَّهُ بِهِ حَتَّى وَقَعَ شِقَّاهُ ثُمَّ جِيءَ بِالْغُلَامِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ارْجِعْ عَنْ دِينِكَ فَأَبَى فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَى نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ اذْهَبُوا بِهِ إِلَى جَبَلِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَاصْعَدُوا بِهِ الْجَبَلَ فَإِذَا بَلَغْتُمْ ذُرْوَتَهُ فَإِنْ رَجَعَ عَنْ دِينِهِ وَإِلَّا فَاطْرَحُوهُ فَذَهَبُوا بِهِ فَصَعِدُوا بِهِ الْجَبَلَ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِيهِمْ بِمَا شِئْتَ فَرَجَفَ بِهِمُ الْجَبَلُ فَسَقَطُوا وَجَاءَ يَمْشِي إِلَى الْمَلِكِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْمَلِكُ مَا فَعَلَ أَصْحَابُكَ قَالَ كَفَانِيهِمُ اللَّهُ فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَى نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَاحْمِلُوهُ فِي قُرْقُورٍ فَتَوَسَّطُوا بِهِ الْبَحْرَ فَإِنْ رَجَعَ عَنْ دِينِهِ وَإِلَّا فَاقْذِفُوهُ فَذَهَبُوا بِهِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِيهِمْ بِمَا شِئْتَ فَانْكَفَأَتْ بِهِمُ السَّفِينَةُ فَغَرِقُوا وَجَاءَ يَمْشِي إِلَى الْمَلِكِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْمَلِكُ مَا فَعَلَ أَصْحَابُكَ قَالَ كَفَانِيهِمُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ لِلْمَلِكِ إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ بِقَاتِلِي حَتَّى تَفْعَلَ مَا آمُرُكَ بِهِ قَالَ وَمَا هُوَ قَالَ تَجْمَعُ النَّاسَ فِي صَعِيدٍ وَاحِدٍ وَتَصْلُبُنِي عَلَى جِذْعٍ ثُمَّ خُذْ سَهْمًا مِنْ كِنَانَتِي ثُمَّ ضَعِ السَّهْمَ فِي كَبِدِ الْقَوْسِ ثُمَّ قُلْ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْغُلَامِ ثُمَّ ارْمِنِي فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ قَتَلْتَنِي فَجَمَعَ النَّاسَ فِي صَعِيدٍ وَاحِدٍ وَصَلَبَهُ عَلَى جِذْعٍ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ سَهْمًا مِنْ كِنَانَتِهِ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ السَّهْمَ فِي كَبْدِ الْقَوْسِ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْغُلَامِ ثُمَّ رَمَاهُ فَوَقَعَ السَّهْمُ فِي صُدْغِهِ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي صُدْغِهِ فِي مَوْضِعِ السَّهْمِ فَمَاتَ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْغُلَامِ آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْغُلَامِ آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْغُلَامِ فَأُتِيَ الْمَلِكُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ أَرَأَيْتَ مَا كُنْتَ تَحْذَرُ قَدْ وَاللَّهِ نَزَلَ بِكَ حَذَرُكَ قَدْ آمَنَ النَّاسُ فَأَمَرَ بِالْأُخْدُودِ فِي أَفْوَاهِ السِّكَكِ فَخُدَّتْ وَأَضْرَمَ النِّيرَانَ وَقَالَ مَنْ لَمْ يَرْجِعْ عَنْ دِينِهِ فَأَحْمُوهُ فِيهَا أَوْ قِيلَ لَهُ اقْتَحِمْ فَفَعَلُوا حَتَّى جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ وَمَعَهَا صَبِيٌّ لَهَا فَتَقَاعَسَتْ أَنْ تَقَعَ فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا الْغُلَامُ يَا أُمَّهِ اصْبِرِي فَإِنَّكِ عَلَى الْحَقِّ *

How It All Began
Nearly four thousand years ago, in the Sumerian town of Ur in the valley of the river Euphrates, lived a young man named Abraham. The people of Ur had once worshipped Allah but as time passed they forgot the true religion and started praying to idols, statues made of wood or clay and sometimes even of precious stones. Even as a small child Abraham could not understand how his people, and especially his father, could make these images with their own hands, call them gods, and then worship them. He had always refused to join his people when they paid respect to these statues. He would leave town to sit alone and think about heavens and the worlds around him.. He was sure his people were doing wrong and so alone he searched for the right way. One clear night as he sat staring at the sky he saw a beautiful shining star, so beautiful that he cried out: 'This must be Allah!' He looked at it in awe for some time, until suddenly it began to fade and then it disappeared. He turned away in disappointment saying: I love not things that set. (Koran vi.77)

On another night Abraham was again looking at the sky and he saw the rising moon, so big and bright that he felt he could almost touch it. He thought to himself: This is my Lord. (Koran vi.78) But it was not long before the moon set as well. Then he said, Unless my Lord guides me, I surely shall become one of the folk who are astray. (Koran vi.78) Abraham then saw the beauty and splendor of the sunrise and decided that the sun must be the biggest and most powerful thing in the universe. But for the third time he was wrong, for the sun set at the end of the day. It was then that he realized that Allah is the Most Powerful, the Creator of the stars, the moon, the sun, the earth and of all living things. Suddenly he felt himself totally at peace, because he knew that he had found the Truth.

When he said unto his father and his folk: What do you worship? They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted to them.

He said: Do they hear you when you cry? Or do they benefit or harm you? They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting in this manner.
He said: See now that which you worship, You and your forefathers! Lo! they are (all) an enemy to me, except the Lord of the Worlds. Who created me, and He guides me, And Who feeds me and waters me. And when I sicken, then He heals me. And Who causes me to die, then gives me life (again) And Who, I ardently hope, will forgive me my sin on the Day of judgement. (Koran xxvi.70-82)
One day, while all the townspeople were out, Abraham angrily smashed all the idols with his right hand except for one which was very large. When the people returned they were furious.
They remembered the things Abraham had said about the idols. They had him brought forth before everyone and demanded, 'Is it you who did this to our gods, 0 Abraham?' Abraham replied, "But this their chief did it. Ask them, if they are able to speak". The people exclaimed,"'You know they do not speak". 'Do you worship what you yourselves have carved when Allah created you and what you make?' Abraham continued, 'Do you worship instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you?' (Koran xxxvii.95-6)(Koran xxi.66)
Finally, Abraham warned them, Serve Allah, and keep your duty unto Him; that is better for you if you did but know. You serve instead of Allah only idols, and you only invent a lie. Lo! those whom you serve instead of Allah own no provision for you. So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him, and give thanks unto Him, (for) unto Him you will be brought back.(Koran xxix. 16-17)

The people of Ur decided to give Abraham the worst punishment they could find: he was to be burnt to death. On the chosen day all the people gathered in the centre of the city and even the King of Ur was there. Abraham was then placed inside a special building filled with wood. The wood was lit. Soon the fire became so strong that the people were pushed back by the flames.

But Allah said: "O fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham". (Koran xxi.69)
The people waited until the fire had completely died down, and it was then that they saw Abraham still sitting there as though nothing had happened! At that moment they were utterly confused. They were not, however, moved by the miracle that had just happened before their very eyes.
Still Abraham tried to persuade his own dear father, who was named Azar, not to worship powerless, un-seeing, un-hearing statues. Abraham explained that special knowledge had come to him and implored his father, 'So follow me and I will lead you on the right path. O my father! Don't serve the Devil.' But Azar would not listen. He threatened his son with stoning if he continued to reject the gods of Ur. He ordered Abraham to leave the city with these words: 'Depart from me a long while.' Abraham said, 'Peace be upon you! I shall ask my Lord's forgiveness for you. Surely He was ever gracious to me.' (Koran xix.43-7)
Imagine how terrible it must have been for him to leave his home,

his family and all that he knew, and set out across the wilderness into the unknown. But at the same time, how could he have remained among people who did not believe in Allah and who worshipped statues? Abraham always had a sense that Allah cared for him and he felt Allah near him as he traveled. At last, after a long hard journey, he arrived at a place by the Mediterranean Sea, not far from Egypt. There he married a noble woman by the name of Sarah and settled in the land of Palestine. Many years passed but Abraham and his wife were not blessed with any children. In the hope that there would be a child, and in keeping with tradition, Sarah suggested that Abraham should marry Hagar, her Egyptian handmaid. Soon after this took place, Hagar had a little boy named Ishmael. Some time later Allah promised Abraham another son, but this time the mother of the child would be his first wife, Sarah. This second son would be called Isaac. Allah also told Abraham that from his two sons-Ishmael and Isaac-two nations and three messages would be founded and because of this he must take Hagar and Ishmael away from Palestine to a new land..................
